‘Historic Fort Cherry Association’ Formed to Commemorate 250th Anniversary of Construction of Region’s Namesake

McDonald, PA – The Historic Fort Cherry Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Heinz History Center Affiliate organization, has been formed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the construction of Cherry’s Fort (commonly known as Fort Cherry). The colonial frontier fort built in 1774 in what is now Mount Pleasant Township, Washington County is where the Fort Cherry School District, Cherry Valley, Cherry Run, multiple businesses, and more derive their names.

Historic Fort Cherry aims to commemorate this anniversary by raising awareness of the fort and family’s history, as well as the dynamic history of the region made up by the Fort Cherry School district to include Mount Pleasant and Robinson Townships, the boroughs of McDonald, Midway, and the village of Hickory, and beyond. It aims to be a regional historical association that cooperates with local historical societies, and is focused on bringing our region’s past to life through the installation of roadside historical markers and commemorative plaques, energetic storytelling, well-researched, easy-to-read online blog articles, an online database of hard-to-find local history sources, and more. Various outreach events are also being planned for the public to include lectures, workshops, and pop-up museum displays.

The Association also aims to target local schools to engage the region's youth and make local history fun and interesting to them through events and lesson plans provided to local school teachers that may be incorporated into their current curriculums.

An all-volunteer organization, Historic Fort Cherry is currently looking for more volunteers to assist in research, writing, and administrative tasks, and is also seeking tax-deductible donations to go toward supporting the Association’s goals. All proceeds of merchandise purchased on the website goes toward supporting the Association
